Adam Schiff is back on my screen telling me that “the public has turned.” Honestly, I haven’t felt this much misplaced optimism since my HR manager told me that “unlimited PTO” wasn’t a trap designed to make me never take a day off again. It’s 2024, Adam. We’ve been through three corporate rebrandings, two “unprecedented” global events, and I’m still using a Slack emoji to hide the fact that I’m currently screaming into a throw pillow. Reality called; it’s currently on hold behind a three-hour wait time with a chatbot named “Democracy-Bot 3000.” Schiff’s latest hot take, courtesy of The Hill, is that the public is finally, totally, super-duper done with the Orange One. It’s the same narrative we’ve been fed since the era of Vine and skinny jeans. It’s like watching a reboot of a show that should have been canceled after the pilot, but somehow it’s in its tenth season and the writers have clearly stopped taking their meds. “The public has turned,” he says, with the unearned confidence of a middle manager presenting a “synergy” slide deck to a room full of people who just want to know if there will be free pizza at the end of this nightmare. As an Elder Millennial who has spent the last decade watching the “walls close in” with the frequency of a mandatory Windows update, I have questions. Which public are we talking about, exactly? The one struggling to afford a carton of eggs, or the one currently screaming at their relatives in a Facebook comment thread? Because from where I’m sitting—which is a desk chair with zero lumbar support in a home office that smells like burnt coffee and broken dreams—the public hasn’t “turned” so much as it has “melted down into a puddle of pure, unadulterated apathy.” It’s a classic Truth vs. Reality moment. The “Truth” in D.C. is whatever keeps the donor checks flowing and the cable news bookings consistent. The “Reality” is that we are all exhausted. We are tired of the “bombshells” that turn out to be damp firecrackers. We are tired of the “turning points” that just lead us back to the same cul-de-sac of political despair. Schiff is out here playing 4D chess, while the rest of us are just trying to remember our Netflix passwords so we can disassociate for forty minutes before the Monday morning stand-up meeting. If the public had truly turned, we wouldn’t be having this conversation for the eight-thousandth time. But sure, Adam. Put it in a memo. Send it to the “Internal Culture” committee. I’ll be over here, checking my 401k and laughing until I cry, or maybe just crying. It’s getting really hard to tell the difference anymore. Can I go back to 2005 now? I promise I’ll appreciate the low-rise jeans more this time. Related Coverage: GOP Rep.
